Josh Ik, a visual artist and creative director based in Lagos, shared his ordeal with FIJ, recounting how he purchased the MTN SIM card in 2017 as a secondary line and registered it for his business purposes. However, due to a switch to a single phone and decreased usage over time, the SIM card remained inactive for months between 2023 and 2026.
The concerning development arose when the SIM card, still linked to Josh Ik’s business, was reassigned to another individual. This mix-up resulted in both the artist in Lagos and an unidentified girl in Jos sharing the same phone number inadvertently, raising significant data privacy and security concerns.
This inadvertent SIM card reassignment underscores the critical importance of robust systems and protocols in safeguarding individuals’ personal information and privacy in the digital age.
