The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has partially demolished illegal structures located behind Barracks Bus Stop in Surulere as part of its ongoing enforcement against unauthorized developments.
In a statement issued on Friday by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Adu Ademuyiwa, LASBCA said the action followed repeated statutory notices and the developers’ failure to comply with the state’s building regulations.
According to the agency, inspections revealed that the affected buildings violated the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law by exceeding approved setback limits and encroaching on spaces designated for safety, accessibility, and proper physical planning.
LASBCA also disclosed that the developers failed to provide valid statutory approval documents for the projects, while the structures breached the state’s building codes and construction regulations, posing potential risks to lives, neighbouring properties, and the environment.
The agency stated that it had previously served the developers with contravention and enforcement notices, directing them to halt the illegal construction activities. However, despite several opportunities to regularise the developments, the owners failed to comply, prompting the partial demolition of the offending sections.
LASBCA noted that the exercise is part of its statutory responsibility to monitor building developments, prevent illegal construction, and ensure compliance with approved building standards across Lagos State.
The agency reaffirmed that its enforcement actions are intended to safeguard public safety, protect the environment, and promote orderly and sustainable urban development.
