President Bola Tinubu has approved the upgrade of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa.
According to a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the decision aligns with the administration’s commitment to strengthening technical education, developing human capital, and unlocking Nigeria’s vast solid minerals potential.
The statement explained that the approval followed a proposal by Ahmed Wadada Aliyu, who advocated for the establishment of a specialised institution to leverage Nasarawa State’s rich solid mineral resources and support Nigeria’s industrialisation agenda.
The new university is expected to provide world-class education, research, and innovation in areas including mining, engineering, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing, and emerging technologies. It will also train the skilled workforce needed to promote value addition, technological advancement, and the sustainable development of Nigeria’s mineral resources.
The Presidency said the approval reflects President Tinubu’s commitment under the Renewed Hope Agenda to align tertiary education with national development priorities by establishing specialised institutions that address key economic needs and take advantage of regional strengths.
President Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission, and other relevant agencies to begin the legal and administrative processes required to implement the conversion.
The President reaffirmed that his administration will continue to invest in education as a strategic tool for economic growth, innovation, job creation, and national prosperity.
