The Labour Party (LP) has announced Hajja Bintu Konto as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, where she will run alongside the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Chibuzo Okereke.
The announcement was made on Saturday in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, who said the decision followed consultations with key stakeholders and reflects the party’s commitment to competence, integrity and inclusive leadership.
According to the party, Konto is a seasoned public health expert and humanitarian with more than three decades of experience in healthcare delivery, community development and humanitarian interventions.
Asogwa said she previously served with Catholic Relief Services, where she held several leadership positions, including Community and Government Liaison Officer. During her career, she coordinated humanitarian and relief efforts for internally displaced persons and vulnerable communities across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.
A trained nurse, midwife and public health specialist, Konto holds a Master’s degree in Public Health. She has also lectured in Community Health and currently serves on the Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund in Nigeria. In addition, she is the National Treasurer of the Civil Society for Malaria Control, Immunization and Nutrition (ACOMIN).
The party highlighted her ability to speak English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, Fulani and Bura, noting that she has led engagements with government agencies, traditional institutions and civil society on health, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and humanitarian programmes.
Labour Party said her nomination demonstrates its commitment to gender inclusion, national unity and competent leadership.
According to the party, the Okereke–Konto ticket combines compassion, administrative experience and a strong understanding of Nigeria’s development challenges, particularly those affecting women, children and communities impacted by insecurity.
The party added that the ticket represents a new generation of people-centred leadership focused on restoring hope, strengthening institutions, reviving the economy and improving national security ahead of the 2027 elections.
