The Action Peoples Party, APP, has initiated legal proceedings against the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Osun State, Bola Oyebamiji, citing alleged irregularities in the documents submitted for the upcoming election. The case, filed at the Federal High Court in Osogbo, names the Independent National Electoral Commission and the APC as co-defendants along with Oyebamiji. The court documents submitted by the APP through its representative, Abdulateef R., call for an investigation into whether Oyebamiji’s documentation fulfills the constitutional criteria for participating in the governorship election. The originating summons dated March 16 urges the court to assess if the candidate’s nomination aligns with the provisions of Section 182(1)(j) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as amended. The APP seeks the court’s intervention to invalidate the publication of Oyebamiji’s candidacy as the APC candidate for the election slated for August 15, 2026. Additionally, the party requests a permanent injunction to prevent INEC from acknowledging or engaging with Oyebamiji as a candidate in the election process. The lawsuit also demands that INEC remove the APC candidate’s name from the official list of contenders for the election. In response, the APC in Osun dismissed the allegations as unfounded and politically driven. The party’s spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, stated, “We were not surprised that such a frivolous suit has been filed against our candidate’s eligibility,” attributing the lawsuit to an attempt to divert attention from the credibility of their candidate for the upcoming election. He affirmed the qualifications of their governorship candidate and accused political rivals of using legal challenges to hinder the APC’s full participation in the forthcoming governorship election.
