Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully repelled a coordinated attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Gajigana, Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State, inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers.
The incident was disclosed by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama in a post on his X account.
According to Makama, the attack occurred at about 7:20 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, when a large number of terrorists, riding motorcycles and backed by two gun trucks, launched an assault on the military base while additional fighters advanced on foot.
Intelligence sources said troops of the 212 Battalion detected the advancing insurgents early and responded with intense firepower, disrupting the attack and forcing the terrorists to retreat.
A reinforcement team led by the battalion’s Commanding Officer later arrived to strengthen the troops’ position and secure the area.
The sources revealed that the terrorists suffered significant casualties during the failed offensive, with several bodies reportedly evacuated by their fleeing comrades.
Two soldiers sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange of fire. They were stabilised at the scene before being evacuated to the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital for further treatment.
The military also recorded minor equipment damage after rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) fragments struck a gun truck, damaging its body and four tyres.
Military sources added that troops would conduct a battlefield exploitation operation at first light to assess the full extent of the terrorists’ losses and recover any abandoned weapons or equipment.
